617 combines a high chromium level with cobalt and molybdenum for outstanding resistance to oxidation, carburisation and hot corrosion up to 1100 °C. The solid-solution-strengthened matrix, plus aluminium/titanium, gives excellent creep and stress-rupture capability in aggressive high-temperature gases.
Welded with matching ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW. Preheat is not required; interpass temperature is kept moderate. Stress-relief is optional and depends on the fabrication code.
The grade is supplied to the following common specifications:
| Standard | Product Form / Scope |
|---|---|
| ASTM B166 | Bar, Rod & Wire |
| ASTM B167 | Seamless Pipe & Tube |
| ASTM B168 | Plate, Sheet & Strip |
| ASTM B564 | Forgings |
| AMS 5887 | Bar for high-temperature service |

617 is a high-temperature superalloy for gas-turbine combustor liners, advanced coal-plant super-heater tubing and concentrated-solar receivers. Its cobalt, molybdenum and aluminium/titanium content give excellent creep, oxidation and hot-corrosion resistance to about 1100 °C.
At room temperature annealed strength is about 700 MPa tensile / 300 MPa yield with 45 % elongation. At 650 °C it still delivers roughly 500 MPa tensile, and creep-rupture strength at 650 °C / 10 000 h is about 230 MPa.
Yes, using matching ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler by GTAW, GMAW or SMAW. No preheat is needed and post-weld stress relief is code-dependent, not mandatory.
617 is the stronger, higher-temperature grade (Co + Mo + Al/Ti) for creep-loaded turbine and boiler parts to 1100 °C. 601 is a simpler, lower-cost Ni-Cr-Al grade for furnace hardware up to about 1200 °C where creep loading is low.
Yes. The high chromium and cobalt levels make it one of the better solid-solution alloys for Type II hot corrosion and oxidation in combustion gases, which is why it is used in turbine hot sections.
ASTM B166/B167/B168/B564 cover the usual product forms, with aerospace-grade bar covered by AMS 5887.
