Hastelloy B — UNS N10001 (Nickel-Molybdenum Alloy)

N10001 technical guide: nominal chemical composition, mechanical and physical properties, corrosion resistance, welding, product forms and ASTM standards...

Hastelloy B (UNS N10001) is a nickel-molybdenum alloy. Original Ni-Mo alloy, superb HCl resistance. Not for oxidising environments. This guide covers its nominal chemical composition, typical mechanical and physical properties, corrosion behaviour, welding, common applications, available product forms and the ASTM standards that apply — everything a specifier needs to evaluate Hastelloy B for a project.

Overview

Hastelloy B belongs to the nickel-molybdenum alloy class of materials. It is original ni-mo alloy, superb hcl resistance. It is not for oxidising environments. It is predecessor to b-2 / b-3.

Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy B is the original nickel-molybdenum alloy, giving exceptional resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures, and to many non-oxidising media. Its very low chromium means it is NOT for oxidising environments or those containing ferric/ cupric ions, which would attack it.

Welding and Fabrication

Welded with matching fillers; the low carbon avoids sensitisation in the HAZ. Avoid exposure to oxidising species during welding and service. Modern fabrications usually choose B-2/B-3 for better weldability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hastelloy B?

Hastelloy B (UNS N10001) is the original nickel-molybdenum alloy, giving exceptional resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures and to many non-oxidising acids. Its very low chromium means it must NOT be used in oxidising environments.

What are Hastelloy B mechanical properties?

Annealed: ≈ 790 MPa tensile, ≈ 350 MPa yield, 40 % elongation, 85–100 HRB.

Why is Hastelloy B not for oxidising service?

With chromium ≤ 1 %, it lacks the passive film needed in oxidising acids or in solutions containing ferric/cupric ions, which would rapidly attack it. For oxidising duty choose a Ni-Cr-Mo grade (C family).

Is Hastelloy B weldable?

Yes, with matching fillers and low carbon to avoid HAZ sensitisation, but modern fabrications usually specify B-2 or B-3 for better weldability.

Where is Hastelloy B used?

Hydrochloric acid handling/storage, non-oxidising sulphuric/phosphoric acid equipment, acid-etching vessels and older chemical-plant retrofits.

Which standards cover Hastelloy B?

Plate/sheet/strip ASTM B333, bar ASTM B335, pipe/tube ASTM B619/B622, fittings ASTM B366.
