Hastelloy B-10 — UNS N10610 (Low-Carbon Nickel-Molybdenum Alloy)

N10610 technical guide: nominal chemical composition, mechanical and physical properties, corrosion resistance, welding, product forms and ASTM standards...

Hastelloy B-10 (UNS N10610) is a low-carbon nickel-molybdenum alloy. Ultra-low-carbon Ni-Mo (≤ 0.01 % C). Weldable without HAZ sensitisation. This guide covers its nominal chemical composition, typical mechanical and physical properties, corrosion behaviour, welding, common applications, available product forms and the ASTM standards that apply — everything a specifier needs to evaluate Hastelloy B-10 for a project.

Overview

Hastelloy B-10 belongs to the low-carbon nickel-molybdenum alloy class of materials. It is ultra-low-carbon ni-mo (≤ 0.01 % c). It is weldable without haz sensitisation. It is excellent hydrochloric acid resistance.

Corrosion Resistance

B-10 is a low-carbon evolution of the Ni-Mo family with carbon held to ≤ 0.01 % so the heat-affected zone stays immune to sensitisation and intergranular corrosion after welding. It keeps the exceptional hydrochloric-acid resistance of the B-type alloys while being far more fabrication-friendly than the older B or W grades.

Welding and Fabrication

Welded with matching ERNiMo-10 fillers; the ultra-low carbon avoids HAZ sensitisation, so post-weld heat treatment is not required for corrosion service. As with all B-types, avoid oxidising environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hastelloy B-10?

B-10 (UNS N10610) is a low-carbon Ni-Mo alloy with carbon ≤ 0.01 % so the weld HAZ stays immune to sensitisation and intergranular corrosion. It keeps the B-family's exceptional hydrochloric-acid resistance while being much easier to fabricate than older B/W grades.

What are Hastelloy B-10 mechanical properties?

Annealed: ≈ 800 MPa tensile, ≈ 400 MPa yield, 40 % elongation, 85–100 HRB.

Why does B-10 matter for welding?

The ultra-low carbon prevents precipitation of carbides in the HAZ during welding, eliminating the need for post-weld heat treatment to restore corrosion resistance – a major improvement over older B-type alloys.

Is Hastelloy B-10 weldable?

Yes, with matching ERNiMo-10 fillers; no post-weld heat treatment is needed for corrosion service. Avoid oxidising environments as with all B-types.

Where is Hastelloy B-10 used?

Hydrochloric acid handling/storage, welded HCl vessels and columns, non-oxidising sulphuric/phosphoric acid equipment and acid-etching tanks.

Which standards cover Hastelloy B-10?

Plate/sheet/strip ASTM B333, bar ASTM B335, pipe/tube ASTM B619/B622, fittings ASTM B366.
